A four float system is typically employed in a triplex pump system. The first two floats are used to monitor the high and low level. The third float is used to activate the "lag" pump and the fourth float is to activate the "lead" pump as well as an alarm. In a duplex pump system the third float can be used to activate a "caution" alarm and the fourth float can be used to activate a "critical" alarm.
